At This Station Kids Will... create their own vocabulary word wall and engage in conversation using the vocabulary. Using the vocabulary cards as examples, the students will create a space in their journals for each word: more, less, fewer, greater than, less than, and equal to. They will write the word, a definition, a sentence using the term and a number sentence using the term. They will also use the Math Talk cards to talk to their partner about ways to use the terms. This will create structured examples for students to practice using their vocabulary.
Differentiation: At this station you can differentiate in a few ways: when students are creating their journal pages and with the Math Talk cards. Encourage students who need more of a challenge to think of their own definitions, sentences and number sentences. Students who need more structure can simply copy the examples on the vocabulary cards into their journals but will still feel like its their own work since they can personalize their journal pages. The Math Talk cards can be differentiated by group. Students needing more of a challenge can be given a set of math cards that include finding the difference between to numbers to determine if they are greater than or less than. Examples of such cards are on the third page of Math Talk cards. Students needing extra reinforcement can try the first two pages of Math Talk cards. These cards are incredibly easy to make on Microsoft Word if you want to make more of your own for your kids.
Formative Assessment: While walking around the stations, you should hear students conversing using the Math Talk cards. You may also hear students talking about sentence examples for their journal pages. Encourage students to think of different examples.
Summative Assessment: Students will turn in their journals after the station ends. You will check to make sure the students are using the terms correctly in the sentences they have made up and that they have the correct definitions. |
