Station 4- Survey
Skills: Students will practice taking surveys to see how data is collected.
|
Objective: Students will use mathematical communication to collect data via informal surveys.
|
Materials: Survey collection sheets, pencils, deck of playing cards, exit slip

At This Station Kids Will... complete a survey to answer questions that they will later graph. By completing this survey, students will learn that surveys are one way to collect data. After all of the students have completed the survey, you will need to consolidate the data later to give to students so they can graph it. Feel free to ask students what they would like to ask their peers and create your own survey sheet. The more the students are interested, the better! Many students may finish this activity quickly, so leave a deck of playing cards at the station. With the cards the students can play the classic card game, WAR, by dividing the deck in half and flipping one card each a time. Students will read the numbers on the card and determine which card is greater than the other and which card is less than the other. The student with the larger card takes both and the children continue to play until one runs out of cards. I suggest renaming the card game since WAR is not appropriate for the first grade classroom in most schools. Additionally, students will need to complete an exit slip to check their understanding of the purpose of surveys.
Differentiation: There is not much room for differentiation in this station, but students who need an extra challenge or like to do extra work can assist you in consolidating the data once it has all been collected. ESL students or students who struggle with reading may benefit from picture examples or a list of choices from which to select an answer to the survey questions.
Formative Assessment: While walking around, you should hear students discussing their favorite things and should hear them repeating the numbers during the card game to determine which number is greater than the other number.
Summative Assessment: Students will complete an exit slip before leaving the station to express their understanding of the importance of surveys. |
